Since when is he big enough to reach the table?Īpril stomps back over to her plate. In an instant all four of his paws are back on the floor and he takes off into the living room as if he were never even there. She finds what she anticipated: Gus beside the table, standing tall enough on his hind legs to lick at her steak. There was no jingle of his collar tags or tapping of his nails on the tile floor or whining for food that she’s obviously going to give him. When she reaches the cabinet where they keep his kibble she realizes something that makes her freeze. How would he? Nonetheless, April gets up from the table with a huff. “Do you want your dinner? Would that help?” But when Gus tilts his head to the side and an ever so faint whine comes rattling out, April feels her resistance crumble. She seems to cause it more often than not. She should be used to this sad little look in his eyes. He ducks his head at her tone, ears sliding back. Sure, they both have a way of getting under her skin and making a home there.Ĭlearly she’s spending way too much time with the both of them.Ī wet nose pokes April’s bare thigh. Sure, they’re both annoyingly clumsy, but even more annoyingly eager to please. Why would a puppy remind her of Sterling? Sure, they both have an innocent look about them that seems to trick people into thinking they're the sweetest things to ever grace the earth. It kind of reminds her of Sterling.Īpril quickly shakes her head. Gus sits as close to her as possible, staring up at her with big, round, hopeful eyes. But neither of her parents are here anymore so April figures she might as well act like she owns the place. It used to be John’s seat, then her mother would leave it open as if the ghost of their old family still existed. “No,” she reminds him, taking a seat at the head of the table. Gus is hot on her heels the whole time, nose in the air and tail wagging with excitement. Gus certainly won’t remember who Barbara is.Īpril puts her finished steak onto a plate and walks it over to the kitchen table. She does everything for a dog that her mother likely won’t even recognize at the end of the summer. She scrubs the carpet when he has an accident in the house and cleans up after him outside when he doesn’t. April has been the one getting his vaccinations. April has been the one taking him for walks. Not that Barbara is even around to see or deal with it.Īpril has been the one feeding him twice a day. ![]() The once ten pound puppy that her mom brought home and lifted in one arm is now twenty pounds and growing everyday. ![]() Their latest vet appointment confirmed it. In the last month Gus has doubled in size. April suspects that he’ll grow into those too before she knows it. They don’t seem nearly as huge dangling from his round face anymore, but his paws are still a little too big for his body. He’s grown into his ears a bit over the last few weeks. ![]() His head tilts at the sound of his name, ears flopping to the side. God, since when did she start talking to a dog conversationally? “Not gonna happen, Gus.” He’s sitting right at her feet and looking up at her, eager and focused, which would be wonderful if April weren’t searing a steak.
